The Hotel Estela Barcelona in Sitges’ Port d’Aiguadolç Marina, popularly known as the Art Hotel, is an atypical, unique and singular 4-star hotel.
With its unsurpassable location opposite the Aiguadolç Marina Beach, this hotel is committed to culture, and especially to art, as an element that sets it apart from all other hotels.
Within its facilities it houses permanent exhibitions of artists as prominent as Josep Maria Subirachs or Josep Puigmartí, who established his atelier and residence in the hotel and who was received in patronage for more than 25 years.
The Hotel Estela is a medium-sized hotel with 63 rooms, but one of its most remarkable particularities is that 15 of its rooms have been painted by artists. These are known as “Artist Rooms“. Artists including Josep Ma. Subirachs, Ramon Moscardó, Josep Grau Garriga, Antonio de Felipe, Ricardo Moraga, Antoni Xaus and Josep Puigmartí have left their mark on the walls and ceilings of these rooms.
This has been the case since 1992, shortly after the hotel opened its doors, when Antoni Xaus painted room 105 in an act of protest, without asking permission to perform his actions. The last 2 Artist Rooms that have been added to the list are those of Antonio de Felipe (room 116) and Ramon Moscardó (room 117). The latter for the second time, as he painted room 114 a few years ago.
Unlike other hotels, the Estela has a specific art department. This department is in charge of organizing cultural events such as conferences, editing and publishing art books and even publishing the graphic work of its artists. The hotel organizes free guided tours of its facilities during which visitors (regardless of whether they are staying at the hotel or not) can discover details and anecdotes regarding the works that make up the hotel’s excellent collection.
Colloquially speaking, we could say that the Hotel Estela is a museum with rooms.
Another of the hotel’s virtues is its magnificent gastronomy. In this regard, the Iris Gallery Restaurant, under the guidance of its chef Jaume Rius, offers a carefully selected Mediterranean market cuisine where the “Fisherman’s Menu” is the main star.
From these lines, we recommend visiting the restaurant and then taking the guided tour.
