Sustainability

The destination’s responsible tourism policy, passed by City Council, has been in place since 2006. This commitment enabled it to earn Biosphere Destination certification in 2016 and renew it annually, achieving the Gold category from 2022, in recognition of its sustainable management model. Biosphere is endorsed by the World Tourism Organisation, which certifies the sustainability of destinations and companies. This is a collective success that attests to the joint work carried out by the city government and local businesses and reinforces Sitges’s sustainable development model, aligned with the 2030 Agenda’s seventeen SDGs.

Today, the destination and 32 companies and tourist attractions, together with the beaches, the Parc del Garraf, the Port de Sitges-Aiguadolç and the Club de Golf Terramar, among others, are part of the Biosphere commitment. Sitges CB has also been part of the programme, with its own certification, since 2024.

Since 2022, Sitges has been part of the Smart Tourism Destinations Network, a project led by the Spanish Secretary of State for Tourism and managed by SEGITTUR. The Network focuses on governance, sustainability, accessibility, innovation and technology as strategic cornerstones for the future of tourism development.
