“Green” and intelligent Sitges, an exciting destination

Sitges is an exciting destination, proof of which being that in 2022 events returned to normal in Sitges and the international market is back again, representing 47% of the requests received, especially from the UK, USA, France, the Netherlands and Scandinavia, among others, which have once again given the destination an economic boost. The outlook for 2023 for the local MICE sector is extremely optimistic.

We know that events are changing and that now sustainability, emotions and engagement are essential for the sector, and this is why Sitges is adapting to the new trends. Sitges is “Green” and intelligent. We are kicking off 2023 with accolades for the work done as a destination, the Biosphere Gold certificate and the certificate of membership in the Network of Smart Tourist Destinations (DTI), which we received as a source of opportunities to adapt to the present moment.

MICE-wise, in 2022 the Sitges CB created a manual for sustainable events in the destination, which brings together all stages of the event, sustainable and local MICE companies, activities, ideas, and encourages visitors to behave responsibly. In October 2021, the Sitges CB promoted the Psicothon as part of its “F5 Sitges Refreshing MICE” program, organized by the University of Barcelona and the Event Management Institute, a research “marathon” where young psychologists competed to create valuable scientific content for the MICE world. From among the many interesting studies that emerged, we would like to highlight the one carried out by Elisabeth Casas Forteza-Rey, NEURODIVERGENTS AND EVENTS… THAT HURT.

Neurodivergent people are those who have a Neurodevelopmental Disorder. Examples of Neurodevelopmental Disorders are Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Disorder with or without Hyperactivity (ADHD / ADD) or Dyslexia. In her article, Elisabeth analyzes the reasons why people with Autism Spectrum Disorders isolate themselves from face-to-face communication events and activities. This study doesn’t address events that are exclusively for autistic attendees or speakers; but also events of any kind likely to receive people with ASD among their audience (for example, a school or an IT congress). The Ave Maria Foundation is a private non-profit institution, acknowledged by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Autonomous Government of Catalonia), which has been offering specialized care to adults with intellectual disabilities since 1987. The Foundation, as it detects new needs, provides the necessary resources with strict quality and sustainability criteria. At present, its activities provide benefits for more than 800 people.

The Foundation encourages innovation and the development of new products or procedures that help improve the quality of life of the people they cater to. From simple everyday items to technological adaptations. The track record of innovations developed by the Foundation in the fields of care and labor inclusion, their determination to expand in this direction through specialization, and their desire to be more effective and increase their impact, led them to found the Institute of Robotics for Dependency in January 2015. The IRD promotes research and innovation in the field of robotics in order to improve the quality of life of dependent people, of their families and of the professionals who provide them with support.Over the next few months, you will find us at:
